"Being in the 10%"

A piece created and performed
by Brooke Cameron.

About being in the 10%

Andy is a young, bubbly lad living in Gateshead. He loves to dance, sing, and act and Saturday theatre schools are just around the corner in the city of Newcastle, his opportunity is so close he can almost taste it. But with these theatre lessons being so high in price and his parents just being made redundant, is this all just a silly little dream for little Andy Ewart?

It’s hard fitting into a new class, it’s even harder when no one is like you or can relate to you. Brookes career is off to a beaming start, although that’s what she thinks. She recalls her teacher in drama school, telling her that even with her great singing ability, she was “Too Northern” to be given the lead role in the Christmas musical...

The 90’s are bursting on the scene and Eve is on the biggest TV show in the UK. Who would’ve thought a girl coming from a small council estate could make a name for herself in the second biggest city in England, Manchester? Will she maintain this stardom or fall down the rabbit hole?

Real stories, real people, real issues that answer the real question:

Why is it that only 10% of the performance industry are working class?

Behind the Artist:
Brooke Cameron

Brooke is a working-class artist from Gateshead, Newcastle. After studying her foundation degree in Musical Theatre, she continued her training at Stella Mann College, a theatre school in London where she obtained her top up and finally graduated with her BA(Hons) in 2020. Brooke continues now to transfer her knowledge from her many years in training behind the scenes rather on stage as her master’s has allowed her to create and adapt work of her own. She is grateful to create theatre that herself and others can identify with to unveil awareness in regard to working class artists in the North, such as herself.
